Stop Kudankulam fuelling, lives are at stake! - Analysis - DNA

Stop Kudankulam fuelling, lives are at stake! - Analysis - DNA:

Dr A Gopalakrishnan -- The author is a past chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board

The government, through its Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), the Nuclear Power Corporation Limited (NPCIL), and the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) is racing to bring the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, Unit-1 (KNPP-1) to full-power operation at the earliest. The questions predominantly troubling the conscientious public today are simply these: Is the Kudankulam Unit-1 ready for introduction of nuclear fuel assemblies into its core (‘fuelling’), having fully completed all the safety modifications and additions recommended by AERB’s Post-Fukushima Committee to Review Safety of Indian Nuclear Power Plants? What other mandatory, pre-fuelling safety-related tasks such as conducting proper emergency drills in villages within a 30 km-radius of the reactors remain? What are the serious implications to public safety if NPCIL and AERB move forward with fuelling activity and bring this reactor to its full power of 1000 MWe in the current state of inadequate and incomplete safety status?
On some of the glaring defaults of the current actions of the DAE, NPCIL and the AERB vis-à-vis KNPP-1, there are three Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) currently before the Supreme Court of India. The next hearing of one SLP that seriously pleads for stopping fuelling activity is set for September 27. As early as on March 26, 2012 , a writ petition (no. 8262) was filed in the Madras High Court for a direction against the DAE, NPCIL, AERB and others to implement all the recommendations of the AERB’s Post-Fukushima Report before fuel-loading is started. In response, the AERB counsel informed the court , “--- that before initial fuel loading is done, the compliance of all the requirements under Annexure-8 (of the AERB report) will be ensured by the AERB and it is only after its satisfaction any direction (for loading fuel) will be given---” . Subsequently , the High Court decided to reserve its orders on August 2, 2012 , pending detailed judgement to follow.
In the interim, since the court had not imposed any stay on actions by NPCIL and AERB, chairman, AERB, used this opportunity to issue a clearance for initial fuel loading of KNPP-1 on August 10 after reviews by their internal committees. The original petitioner then filed yet another writ petition (no. 22253) in the Madras HC on August 13, challenging the fuel-loading clearance given by AERB, even while 11 out of the 17 safety recommendations of the AERB’s Post-Fukushima Report still remained to be implemented. AERB, in reply to this writ petition, submitted two affidavits, first one on August 18 and another on August 22.
Article continues below the advertisement...
The post-Fukushima evaluations by an independent AERB committee, headed by a past chairman of the AERB had recommended 17 safety upgrades in Annexure-8 of its report. The committee, however, did not sort these on the basis of relative importance, urgency or priority. The sense you get from this report is that all 17 corrective steps are equally important and AERB must insist on all of them being fully implemented and tested before fuel-loading is permitted. This is consistent with the affidavit earlier submitted to the Madras HC by Mr R. Suresh Kumar, counsel for AERB, “ --- that before initial fuel loading is done, the compliance of all the requirements under Annexure-8 will be ensured by the AERB and it is only after its satisfaction that any direction will be given-----” .
However, in their affidavits to the same court on August 18 and 22, AERB reversed its stand by stating, “---recommendations in Annexure-8 of the Post-Fukushima Report were considered (by the internal AERB committees) during review of the application for fuel loading submitted by NPCIL. The review indicated that KNPP-1 has adequate safety measures against external events -- In order to further enhance safety , as an abundant measure , some additional safety enhancements proposed by NPCIL were reviewed in depth and accepted for implementation in a phased manner.”
“Based on the review and resolution of NPCIL submissions, AERB agreed for short-term (less than six months) and long-term ( less than two years) implementation of the Post-Fukushima recommendations from the date of the fuel-loading clearance”.
Ultimately, the Madras HC did not agree with the plea of the protesters for full implementation of Annexure-8 safety steps before fuel loading is initiated and the matter is now being heard by the Supreme Court. Even as the Supreme Court hearings are going on, the NPCIL and the AERB are already loading the nuclear fuel into KNPP-1.
What the AERB has done is a total volte face of its earlier stated positions in the Madras HC, and contrary to the spirit and recommendations of the AERB Post-Fukushima Safety Evaluation Committee.
This has happened because the DAE, NPCIL and AERB appear to be under the direct control of the PMO on the Kudankulam issue, and none of them dares to take any decisions on their own.
The PM, is for months accused in the national and international press for India’s policy paralysis, the dwindling performance of the power sector, and for substantial slippage in the execution schedules of many major projects. During his last two visits to Russia, the PM promised expeditious completion of KNPP-1&2. The local protests at site have put a monkey wrench into his promises and timetable. PM and his PMO consider their face-saving to be more important than the possibility of imperiling the lives of people living near KNPP-1, and appear to have clearly instructed the DAE-AERB combine to rush through with commissioning the plant. The subservient DAE and AERB seem to be complying with his directions.
In this hurried approach to starting the KNPP-1 project, what essential safety precautions are the NPCIL and AERB tossing by the wayside? As per current plans, the reactor will be operated at least for the first two years or more at the full power level of 1000 MWe, without its primary containment being assessed for its ultimate load-bearing capacity; without the availability of a portable diesel-powered unit with sensors and instrumentation to monitor essential safety parameters in case of a total blackout; in the absence of a set of mobile self-powered pumping set for emergency area use; without rectifying the serious inadequacies in instrumentation for independent monitoring of plant status during major accidents; and without the addition of mobile back-up power units like air-cooled diesel sets. Why each of these actions should take as long as 24 months to complete is unimaginable, but these actions have to be indeedexpedited, since they are all essential for mitigating the consequences of a major accident.
The AERB committee has also strongly recommended the urgent installation of an additional seismically-qualified 8,000 cubic-meter capacity back-up water storage tank as an alternate source for use under emergency situations where such actions as injection of borated water into the core and into the spent-fuel pool, charging water into the steam generator secondary side, etc will require excessive amounts of water. The already provided emergency water-storage facility has not been seismically-qualified and may not withstand moderate earthquakes. This anomaly has to be urgently rectified through analysis and repair. This existing storage was also found to be inadequate in holding capacity , for removing decay heat for a period of a minimum one week . This too is to be rectified. In case of a beyond design basis accident (BDBA), the emergency operating procedures to be used are still to be formulated and documented, to help impart training on BDBA to the operating staff.
It is more than 16 months since the Fukushima accident occurred and NPCIL has not even started planning for these procedures. Each of the above tasks is put in for “short-term” completion, namely, within the next six months. I doubt whether a satisfactory completion of many of these tasks can be achieved in six months, each may take more like one year at least.
As it stands, the important point to note is that NPCIL and AERB are NOT going to carry out any of the short or long-term tasks mentioned above, before the reactor is fuelled and brought to 1000 MWe power level. This approach is totally unacceptable from the safety point of view. Whether these 17 safety corrections are implemented or not, the probability of a major accident will remain more or less the same. But, ALL these safety corrections are necessary to ensure that the mitigation of the consequences will be far more acceptable with the corrections implemented than without, and these safety corrections will provide a distinctly safer environment for populations around the KNPP-1. Therefore, ALL the above-mentioned long-term and short-term safety corrections recommended by the AERB committee must be completed before the reactor is fuelled. Whatever fuel so far loaded into the core can be taken out safely and stored for future use.

Two roads to Kudankulam | Deccan Chronicle

Two roads to Kudankulam | Deccan Chronicle:

he protests in Kudankulam have brought the debate over nuclear energy into sharp focus. The debate spans the questions of safety, environment, ethics, energy-economics, development perspectives and undoubtedly it includes the question of social justice as well — after all the issue of who faces the risks and who benefits becomes a contentious one in a country like ours. The ordinary individual could be easily caught between a volley of powerful arguments, buttressed with formidable figures and powerful rhetoric thrown from both sides — the proponents and opponents of nuclear energy.
Sometimes, looking at events far removed from one’s neighborhood helps bring about clarity. We could look at faraway Finland or Flamanville in France. These are two sites that will have the latest EPR (evolutionary power reactor) nuclear reactors. EPR design, while supposedly heralding in a new generation of reactors, lays claim to being the safest and most economical of nuclear technologies for power plants. These are planned to be large and complex plants. Finland was the first to sign up for this technology and the Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power plant was held as the shining example of nuclear resurgence in Europe. For nearly 20 years no nuclear plants had been built in Europe and in 2005 work began at the Olkiluoto 3 site. After six years into construction, in October 2011, a further delay of five years was announced — the original date of commissioning the plant was 2009. This led Areva — the supplier of EPR reactor technology — and TVO, the power plant owner in Finland, to a legal dispute. The costs had spiralled out of control. From an estimate of three billion euros it is now expected to touch 6.6 billion euros.
At Flamanville, too, cost overruns are of a similar magnitude where initial estimates were budgeted around three billion euros, and current escalations have led to an overrun that stands at more than double that figure. And the final bill, on completion, is expected to be seven or 7.5 billion euros. The original date of commissioning for the Flamanville plant was 2013 and it looks as though it will now stretch to 2016. Not withstanding all this, the construction process has been plagued by all kinds of problems raising quality and safety concerns. The sheer complexity is daunting. China’s Taishan power plants were the next to opt for EPR technology. Here, Areva is a sub-contractor.
While there was no information available initially on these, it now emerges that while keeping to schedules does not seem to be a major concern here, several quality and safety concerns have come up. The international nuclear safety watchdog, STUK, was shown safety inspection reports from China by the Finnish broadcasting company Yle, which had obtained the reports. STUK has since written to the Chinese authorities requesting for the inspection reports on the EPR projects.
The economics of nuclear power is yet another area that is hotly debated. Be it initial investments, decommissioning expenses or winding up costs — this aspect too is bitterly argued over in this imbroglio. Recently, in August 2012, Exelon Corporation, the US’ largest nuclear power plants operator, withdrew its application to develop two reactors in Victoria, Texas, citing nuclear power plants being uneconomical for now and in the foreseeable future. This tells us a lot. In the economics of nuclear energy one has to remember decommissioning involves costs. The decommissioning cost of the Niederaichbach nuclear plant was 1.9 million euro per MW and the cost of decommissioning the Finnish EPR would be around three billion euros.
The Fukushima nuclear disaster, of course, has changed the debate permanently. But then the proponents of nuclear energy quickly point out that the Onagawa N-power plant survived the tsunami despite its greater proximity to the epicentre, just as they respond to the economics of N-power by saying that in our country, energy is crucial and what is applicable in the US and Europe need not be transported into our reality.
In the end one realises there are two opposing paradigms. Opponents of the nuclear technology are convinced that the nuclear option is fundamentally flawed. The proponents see this as a dogma. While the opponents of nuclear energy say they have their heart in the right place, the proponents’ retort is that their heads are in the wrong place. The proponents are usually hardnosed pragmatists who see all technologies as having risks and hold that it is a question of managing them and trading off wisely. Should we stop all development because there are certain risks, they ask.
Moved by a sense of overarching responsibility for all life present and future, the opponents find the supporters of nuclear energy basically embracing a human-centric worldview, that is myopic and self-centred. The proponents see the other camp as dreamers not grounded in reality and even charge the opponents of nuclear power of being oblivious of development imperatives.

In 2010, 741 tax returns were filed to the federal government from a single address in Belle Glade, Fla., the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports. In response, the Internal Revenue Service issued over $1 million in combined tax refunds to that address.

That report notes that in addition to the Belle Glade home, there was an address in Tampa that sent in 518 tax returns and got back almost $1.8 million in refunds

Just One Thing: Hush the Inner Critic | Greater Good

Just One Thing: Hush the Inner Critic | Greater Good:

By Rick Hanson | August 22, 2012
Messing up is easy, says Rick Hanson. But forgiving yourself takes practice.

We’re pleased to present the latest installment of Dr. Rick Hanson’s Greater Good blog, featuring posts from his Just One Thing (JOT) newsletter, which offers simple practices designed to bring you more joy, more fulfilling relationships, and more peace of mind and heart.
Everyone messes up. Me, you, the neighbors, everybody.
It’s important to acknowledge mistakes, learn from them so they don’t happen again, and feel appropriate remorse. But most people keep beating themselves up way past the point of usefulness: they’re unfairly self-critical.
Inside the mind are many sub-personalities. For example, one part of me sets the alarm clock for 6 am to get up and exercise… and then when it goes off, another part of me grumbles: Who set the darn clock?
More broadly, there are an inner critic and an inner protector inside each of us. For most people, that inner critic is continually yammering away, looking for something, anything, to find fault with. It magnifies small failings into big ones, punishes you over and over for things long past, ignores the larger context, and doesn’t credit you for your efforts to make amends.
That’s why you need your inner protector to stick up for you: to put your weaknesses and misdeeds in perspective, to highlight your many good qualities surrounding your lapses, to encourage you to return to the high road even if you’ve gone down the low one, and—frankly—to tell that inner critic to Hush Up Now.
How?
Start by picking something relatively small that you’re still being hard on yourself about, and then try the methods below; lay the foundation for deep and lasting self-forgiveness. I’ve spelled out these steps in detail, but you can usually get to the heart of them in a few minutes. Then work up to more significant issues.

Here we go:

1. Start by getting in touch with the feeling of being cared about by someone in your life today or from your past. Get a sense that this person’s caring for you, and perhaps other aspects of him or her, have been taken into your own mind as parts of your inner protector. Do this with other beings who care about you, and open to a growing sense of your inner protector.

2. Staying with feeling cared about, bring to mind some of your many good qualities. You could ask the protector what it knows about you. These are facts, not flattery, and you don’t need a halo to have good qualities like patience, determination, fairness, or kindness. These first two steps will help you face whatever needs forgiving, and actually forgive yourself.

3. If you yelled at a child, lied at work, partied too hard, let a friend down, cheated on a partner, or were secretly glad about someone’s downfall—whatever it was—acknowledge the facts: what happened, what was in your mind at the time, the relevant context and history, and the results for yourself and others. Notice any facts that are hard to face—like the look in a child’s eyes when you yelled at her—and be especially open to them; they’re the ones that are keeping you stuck. It is always the truth that sets us free.

4. Sort what happened into three piles: moral faults, unskillfulness, and everything else. Moral faults deserve proportionate guilt, remorse, or shame, but unskillfulness calls for correction, no more. (This point is very important.)
You could ask others—include those you may have wronged—what they think about this sorting (and about other points below), but you alone get to decide what’s right. For example, if you gossiped about someone and embellished a mistake he made, you might decide that the lie in your exaggeration is a moral fault deserving a wince of remorse, but that casual gossip (which most of us do, at one time or another) is simply unskillful and should be corrected (i.e., not done again) without self-flagellation.

5. In an honest way, take responsibility for your moral fault(s) and unskillfulness. Say in your mind or out loud (or write): I am responsible for ______ , _______ , and _______ . Let yourself feel it. Then add to yourself: But I am NOT responsible for ______ , _______ , and _______ . For example, you are not responsible for the misinterpretations or over-reactions of others. Let the relief of what you are NOT responsible for sink in.

6. Acknowledge what you have already done to learn from this experience, and to repair things and make amends. Let this sink in. Appreciate yourself.

7. Next, decide what if anything remains to be done—inside your own heart or out there in the world—and then do it. Let it sink in that you’re doing it, and appreciate yourself for this, too.

8. Now check in with your inner protector: is there anything else you should face or do? Listen to the still, quiet voice of conscience, so different from the pounding scorn of the critic. If you truly know that something remains, then take care of it. But otherwise, know in your heart that what needed learning has been learned, and that what needed doing has been done.

9. And now actively forgive yourself. Say in your mind, out loud, in writing, or perhaps to others statements like: I forgive myself for ______ , _______ , and _______ . I have taken responsibility and done what I could to make things better. You could also ask the inner protector to forgive you, or others out in the world, such as the person you wronged.

10. You may need to go through one or more of the steps above again and again to truly forgive yourself, and that’s alright. Allow the experience of being forgiven—in this case, by yourself—to take some time to sink in. Help it sink in by opening up to it in your body and heart, and by reflecting on how it will help others if you to stop beating yourself up.

May you be at peace.

How to Be Assertive (Without Losing Yourself) - Amy Gallo - Best Practices - Harvard Business Review

How to Be Assertive (Without Losing Yourself) - Amy Gallo - Best Practices - Harvard Business Review:

Principles to Remember
Do:
  • Assess your own degree of assertiveness and ask others for feedback
  • Set realistic goals to make small changes in your behavior and stick to them
  • Forge relationships with colleagues outside of work so that you feel more comfortable speaking up
Don't:
  • Assume that assertiveness is always a good thing — the context you work in and your gender both matter
  • Try to imitate someone else's behavior — you can change while still being true to who you are
  • Overcompensate and become aggressive — balance assertiveness with consideration of others

How Todd Akin And Paul Ryan Partnered To Redefine Rape | ThinkProgress

How Todd Akin And Paul Ryan Partnered To Redefine Rape | ThinkProgress:

Missouri U.S. Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) claimed that “legitimate rape” does not often lead to pregnancy because “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” This is not the first time the biologically challenged senate candidate tried to minimize the impact of rape. Last year, Akin joined with GOP vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) as two of the original co-sponsors of the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” a bill which, among other things, introduced the country to the bizarre term “forcible rape.”
Federal law prevents federal Medicaid funds and similar programs from paying for abortions. Yet the law also contains an exception for women who are raped. The bill Akin and Ryan cosponsored would have narrowed this exception, providing that only pregnancies arising from “forcible rape” may be terminated. Because the primary target of Akin and Ryan’s effort are Medicaid recipients — patients who are unlikely to be able to afford an abortion absent Medicaid funding — the likely impact of this bill would have been forcing many rape survivors to carry their rapist’s baby to term. Michelle Goldberg explains who Akin and Ryan would likely target:
Under H.R. 3, only victims of “forcible rape” would qualify for federally funded abortions. Victims of statutory rape—say, a 13-year-old girl impregnated by a 30-year-old man—would be on their own. So would victims of incest if they’re over 18. And while “forcible rape” isn’t defined in the criminal code, the addition of the adjective seems certain to exclude acts of rape that don’t involve overt violence—say, cases where a woman is drugged or has a limited mental capacity. “It’s basically putting more restrictions on what was defined historically as rape,” says Keenan.
Although a version of this bill passed the GOP-controlled House, the “forcible rape” language was eventually removed due to widespread public outcry. Paul Ryan, however, believes that the “forcible rape” language does not actually go far enough to force women to carry their rapist’s baby. Ryan believes that abortion should be illegal in all casesexcept for “cases in which a doctor deems an abortion necessary to save the mother’s life.” So rape survivors are out of luck.
And, of course, as we learned today, Akin isn’t even sure that “legitimate” rape survivors can get pregnant in the first place.

Todd Akin, Paul Ryan and the very real war on women | New York Daily News

Todd Akin, Paul Ryan and the very real war on women | New York Daily News:

Akin and Ryan were the original co-sponsors of the controversial bill H.R. 3, “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” which initially included language which changed the definition of “rape” to “forcible rape,” until public pressure forced the bill’s supporters to remove that unacceptable and narrow definition. As I wrote previously, Paul Ryan is not just anti-choice, his anti-choice views are extreme and just plain bad for all women.
Linking Ryan to Akin and the idea that there is such a thing as “legitimate rape” based on pseudo-science and folklore is something that needs to be done before the upcoming election. While Team Romney attempted to create distance with Akin, saying that both Romney and Ryan “disagree” with his statements, there was nothing in their statement that said they condemn his remarks as hurtful to victims. There was also nothing in Team Romney’s statement that pointed out that what Akin said about pregnancies resulting from rape being rare is just flat-out wrong.
Ryan was against abortion in all cases including rape until Team Romney’s statement. Romney has said he would get rid of Planned Parenthood and has been moving further right on women’s issues since he was a pro-choice governor of Massachusetts.

HOW WE DETERMINED VALUE: Our rankings this year were computed by statistician George Recck, director of the Math Resource Center at Babson College. As in years past, we gathered data on area schools by consulting school officials and websites, as well as the Massachusetts Department of Education. With this information, Recck calculated mean scores for each data category and then ranked schools based on their distance from the averages. With this traditional performance ranking in hand, he also evaluated performance against tuition, producing a ranking that shows which high schools deliver the most academic bang for the buck.
. Information Not Available
For schools that did not provide figures, the average was used as a placeholder when computing the rankings. Our rankings focused on schools in Eastern Massachusetts, mostly inside or around the 495 belt. If your school is not on the list, it does not mean it did poorly, it just means it fell outside our coverage area.
Private Schools Category Weight Breakdown:
  • Avg. Class Size 15%
  • Stud./Teacher Ratio 15%
  • Stud./AP Courses 7.5%
  • Stud./Coll. Counselors 12.5%
  • Stud./Sports Offered 5%
  • Financial Aid % 15%
  • SAT-Reading 10%
  • SAT-Math 10%
  • SAT-Writing 10%
*After initially denying our request for SAT and financial aid data, Roxbury Latin agreed to present it to us after the September issue went to press. Those categories have been filled in here, though it was toolate to factor them into the rankings.

For schools that did not provide figures, the average was used as a placeholder when computing the rankings. Our rankings focused on schools in Eastern Massachusetts, mostly inside or around the 495 belt. If your school is not on the list, it does not mean it did poorly, it just means it fell outside our coverage area.

Valarmathi...you are too unkind, cruel and crude in your reductionism. Always noticed that you are quite a male chauvinist despite your pretentions. Yes, The Hindu newspaper has a Brahmanical legacy...but people like Gail Omvedt and Kancha Iliah wrote in it..and so does Sugitharani in Kalachuvadu...your kind of political correctness is nothing short of being fascist...and for that matter you are not even a Dalit! And you are talking big as if you are the conscience of this world.

வசிஷ்டர் வாயால் பிரம்ரிஷிப் பட்டம்! தன்யனானேன் சுவாமி :) [male chauvinist - fascistic] You have taken the final point for this and comparing it with Gail and Iliah. But they have never been stooges of THE HINDU whereas the later has been in 'almost' such a relation with KALACHUVADU.

Valar Mathi
And you have nothing to say what has been going on in the tamil literary scene for the past four or five years nor about the kind of rapture that prevailed between Sugirtharani and the ppl she has now started attacking for the simple reason that u r too removed from such things (positively and negatively). My intention here was to bring that to attention and i think i have replied to your 'correction' about my 'nothing short of fascistic kinda PC'. Thanks.

I don't agree...Kalachuvadu has opened up a literary space and the readership of Kalachuvadu like The Hindu outstrips the caste of those who produce it.
Wed at 12:16pm

Venkatesh Chakravarthy
Gail and Iliah were writing regularly when Malini Parthasarathy was the editor of the centre page...now things have changed in The Hindu with the return of N. Ram...so is it fair if during the time they wrote regularly in The Hindu if I had named them as the stooges of that paper?
Wed at 12:20pm

Valar Mathi
The literary space that Kalachuvadu opened was in reaction to and in conjunction with the tendencies that developed in the mid 80s (which i know only thro' reading) in PADIGAL and reached its peak thro' NIRAPIRIHAI. From the first issue of Kalachuvadu (Kannan) one can notice an encounter with the above tendencies to depreciate them as 'intellectual' humbug.
Wed at 12:23pm

Valar Mathi
What seems to many as a 'democratic' gesture on the part of Kalachuvadu (Kannan) is nothing but an open and arrogant initiation of 'debates' that is more explicit in its series of interviews (beginning with SNR). In my opinion (and not only 'in my') Kannan is a good MBA who successfully 'digested' (வாதாபி ஜீரணோபவ!) those trends 'providing space' ... Read Morefor all sorts of views and opinions. One can interpret this as 'democratic opening', 'striping one's traditional base of readership' or else as a gesture of incorporating divergent views to suit one's agendas at the same instance gaining a credible image of being 'democratic'.
Wed at 12:31pm

Valar Mathi
My point was it is not right to compare Gail's and Iliah's contributions in THE HINDU with that of Sugirtharani's in Kalachuvadu. You never said them 'stooges of that paper' nor did i.
Wed at 12:38pm

Venkatesh Chakravarthy
In that sense...Sugitharani is also not a stooge of Kalachuvadu as you reduce her to be!
Wed at 12:53pm

Venkatesh Chakravarthy
She is just using the space which is available to her...The moment that closes for her I am sure that she would find other spaces.
Wed at 12:54pm

Valar Mathi
That wd be fine :) But i don't have much hope. For instance, what was her stance with regard to the short story by Su. Ra. which was a deliberate provocation and insult of dalit women (i don't exactly remember it's title ... vaguely remember it - "Pillai Keduthan Vilai" - or something)? When most dalit writers including Yazan Yadhi and Dalit Murasu condemned the short story she along with Ravikumar and a few others stood in defense of it openly!
Wed at 1:17pm

Venkatesh Chakravarthy
I have a lot of respect for people like Ravi Kumar despite what you may consider as their flaws...why should all Dalits speak in one monolithic voice and more over I do not wish to rush into any speedy conclusions about that Su. Ra. story. My memories are somewhat fogged regarding that and for the time being I cannot take you on that. Still I would give the benefit of the doubt to Ravi and Sugitharani.
Wed at 1:24pm

Valar Mathi
I am certainly not against 'using' spaces constituted in the process of development of public spheres. I hope you would agree that we should make such spaces as points of contestations. And i hope you won't deny that one should never forget the limits of such points and if one fails to take note of such limits the inevitable consequence - corruption.
Wed at 1:25pm

Venkatesh Chakravarthy
Well...Valarmathi...only now people like them are getting a space to make their voices heard...let us not be too hasty in our judgment...this is my humble plea! For almost a 100 years inspite of all the necessary dissent of those who heralded a Non-Brahmin politics there has been great deal of corruption in thought, word and deed. And for a long time it is people like SVR's and Kovai Gnanis who ruled the roost as if they had got everything right!
Wed at 1:48pm

Valar Mathi
I do agree that Dalit writers ( or any other marginalized community) don't have to be a monolithic bloc. In fact, they are not so. Adhavan Deetchanya is more or less aligned with CPM. N. T. Rajkumar, Nada. Sivakumar and a few others are aligned with CPI. RajGouthaman is a 'one man bloc'. A few are aligned with Sivagami - like Yazahan Adhi. Some are... Read More close with Dalit Murasu - like Azahgia Periyavan. And Madhivannan is a loner being Arundhadiyar. Am well aware of such things and have a good rapture with some. But i have lost hope of RaviKumar and Sugirdharani and such likes watching their responses and commitments in quite a number of issues. Anyway, you can have your own 'benefit of doubt'. :)
Wed at 1:49pm

Chaks, i can only apologize to YOU if my initial comments were somewhat offending to you. I do agree that it's a new generation of ppl who have risen up against all the odds. But, they are not the first generation ... i have in mind the generation of Rettai Malai Sreenivasan. And i hope you know what kinda damage he caused to Ambedkar's attempts ...

Well ... i think that's one possible way of approaching or choosing among divergent trends within dalit politics and other marginalized communities' political groupings. We don't have to take up a tirade against whom 'we' - am conscious that 'we' are not Dalits - think are pulling down the politics. But we should at least point out their misgivings... Read More not only to them but to the larger arena of political sphere. That's the reason i kept dumb in spite of knowing what happened in the event mentioned in the article.
